Importance of Exercise

Standard Poodles will lay around the house all day with you. They are smart loving and emotional supportive. Don’t let their easy lay back character fool you though. They do need their exercise. by the time they are six months old they need to have at least two exercise sessions daily. Exercise can be playing fetch, playing chase, tug of war running or walking. If walking they need a minimum of an hour walk daily. The evening walk is what recommend.

We walk our poodles twice daily for forty-five minutes each time. It ends up being four to five miles daily. They still have their crazy times for about ten minutes in the morning and the same in the evening. These look like kids bursts off energy. You know the ones that seem crazy and then they hit the pillow and sleep hard. That kind of crazy. They come on, work themselves out and then they are done for the day. Ours usually have their last burst about 8:30pm.

I realize it’s not always possible to exercise your dog twice daily and just know, the evening exercise is an absolute must. Evening exercise is the most rewarding for you and your dog. You get that emotional and mental relaxation from a long hard work Day and your dog gets the exercise needed for the day too. On your walk the dog gets to socialize with others. I know sometimes it’s just sniffing their way around. It’s ok to allow a little bit but not the whole walk.

I find it easier to use a gentle lead halter so that I am in control of our walk. I have tried other halters and harnesses and the walks we’re not enjoyable as I was being walked by pulling dogs.

Evening walks help everyone relax and have a good night’s sleep. If you are interested in the gentle lead halter, please go to Chewy.com to find it and read the reviews to see if it’s something you would like to give a try. (You need to train your dog or the gentle lead won’t work) follow the recommended steps from the manufactuer.
